AI Is Redefining Your Work, Not Replacing You
A friend asked, “Will AI replace me? If so, when?”
The honest answer is that it might. I have no idea when, but yes, some roles may eventually be replaced.
A better question is: Which parts of your work will change, and where will your value matter most?
We may have one job title at our work, but few jobs are defined by one consistent task or activity. Most are a combination of routine tasks, complex decisions, relationships, specialized knowledge, judgment, and accountability.
AI will affect each of those differently.
It may automate documentation, accelerate analysis, support research, summarize information, or produce a useful first draft. That does not necessarily mean it has replaced the person responsible for the work.
Completing a task and carrying responsibility for the outcome are two different things.
AI can produce an answer. A person may still need to determine whether that answer is correct, appropriate, complete, or safe to act on. Someone still has to understand the context, recognize uncertainty, manage risk, make trade-offs, and ultimately answer for the decision.
That distinction matters because the value of certain skills will change as AI becomes more capable.
When technology can perform routine execution quickly and cheaply, simply doing the task becomes less valuable. Judgment, verification, strategy, trust, specialized knowledge, and accountability become more important.
This changes how we should think about our careers and our value within the organization.
Break your role into its individual parts. Ask yourself what AI can perform on its own, what it can help you do better, and what still requires human ownership. Then look carefully at the capabilities that become more valuable when routine work becomes easier.
Can you define the right problem?
Can you recognize when an AI-generated answer is wrong?
Can you make a difficult decision when the information is incomplete?
Can you explain that decision clearly and take responsibility for it?
Those are increasingly important questions.
The goal is not to compete with AI on speed alone. Move closer to the areas where human judgment carries weight: customers, decisions, quality control, risk, strategy, expertise, and accountability.
AI may redefine your work. Your opportunity is to define where you create value.
